What Does Rebellion Bring?

What dreams disturb
my warn sleep,
I have work to do and
loads to lift.
So I pass my plate, and
give the words
of greeting and farewell.

My eyes are tired from
the chaos and the pushing.
I will not shun the struggle---
I'll face it. In cash, or food,
or work, or fuss.

I see the winter snows and
frost; I hear the thrush's
song; I see the toilers in the
mart; The singers melody will
feed a maxim as old as man.

I must pass before her in
inquiring gaze. These things
will be, these things will be.
When I am dumb, my voice is
dumb. Who fears the crowd
that rebellion brings? I will
lower as tall as the tallest trees.
